Kiln seal is the auxiliary equipment for rotary kilns, rotary coolers, and rotary dryers, and is widely used in cement, building material, metallurgy, mining, petroleum, chemical, and other industries.

The rotary kiln sealing system solves the problem of air leakage and dew ash between the rotary parts and the fixed parts and increases the tertiary air temperature of the kiln head to ensure a normal thermal environment.

Although there are various types of kiln sealing, the most commonly used kiln seal is fish scale sealing. The rotary kiln is sealed with a special new type of semi-flexible material with high-temperature resistance and wear resistance, including heat-resistant steel fish scales, carbon-silicon-aluminum composite panels, and ordinary steel fish scales. The rotary kiln is deformed by the movement of the rotary kiln, so as to adapt to the deformation of the kiln body, the deformation of the cylinder body, the deflection of the cylinder body and the eccentricity caused by the rotary kiln in the high-temperature use state.

Types of kiln seal

There are probably the following categories of rotary kiln seals:

  • By the part used: kiln inlet seal and kiln outlet seal.
  • By the sealing direction: Axial seal, radial seal.
  • By the sealing form: Fish scale seal, graphite seal, cylinder seal, labyrinth seal, baffle type seal;
fish scale seal

Fish scale sealing is the most mainstream sealing form at this stage. Because of its easy installation and maintenance, and good sealing performance, it can be used for both rotary kiln inlet sealing and rotary kiln outlet sealing. It is widely used in dryers and single-cylinder coolers. Taking the cement industry as an example, the kiln head of the rotary kiln is sealed with fish scales, and the proportion of fish scales used for the kiln tail seal is relatively large. Other industries such as metallurgy, building materials, chemical industry, and other industries use a large proportion of fish scale seals.

Graphite block seal

The graphite block seal can be used for the kiln outlet seal and the kiln inlet seal. The old-fashioned graphite block seal adopts the axial sealing method, which is the same as the cylinder seal. Due to its certain defects, there are not many units currently used. The new graphite block seal with radial sealing method will be the development direction in the future.

Cylinder type seal

Cylinder type seals are mainly used for the sealing of rotary kiln tails for the production of powder and granular materials and are generally used in the cement industry. All have been transformed into the form of the fish scale seals.

Labyrinth seal

The labyrinth seal is a labyrinth form composed of multiple annular baffles with different diameters. The combination form of the labyrinth seal and the fish scale seal and combined form of sealing with graphite blocks is also used in some rotary kiln projects.

Rotary kiln seal working principle

Rotary kiln needs kiln supporting rollers for support, and kiln tyre ring or girth gears drive the rotation. Because it is supported by the kiln support roller and its rotation characteristics, there will be a certain gap between the rotary kiln and the connection parts with other production devices, to prevent it from rubbing against the production devices connected to it during the rotation process.

Some industries do not have many requirements for these gaps. For example, in some industries that use single-cylinder coolers, the cooling machine itself is used to cool materials. If the process conditions are good, the existence of gaps can also play a role in heat dissipation; but most rotary kiln does not allow gaps at the inlet and outlet. The existence of gaps will affect air leakage, air intake, ash leakage, and heat loss. Therefore, it is necessary to seal these gaps to prevent air leakage, air intake, and ash leakage.
